The Scope of Localization

It seems as though I am often writing about “the complex process of localization.” But just why is localization such an intricate field? The answer lies in the scope of issues that must be taken into consideration in order to carry out a successful localization project.

Language translation and interpreting are, of course, no simple tasks. Localization, though, is the language service that covers the most ground, including:

  • Language
  • Computer-encoded text
  • Different alphabets and numerical systems
  • Currencies
  • Date/time format, including use of different calendars and time zones
  • Images, colors and their cultural significance
  • Names and titles
  • Presentation of telephone numbers and addresses
  • Knowledge of consumer behavior
  • Weights and measures
  • And even paper sizes!

It’s easy to see that website and software localization involves a lot more than just language translation on a screen. That’s why it’s essential to turn to a qualified language service provider for any localization project.
